Applying a Lens of Trauma; Utilizing a Framework of Resilience

Dr. David Pole is responsible for the development of programs, teaching, administration and research in interprofessional education and collaborative practice at the Saint Louis University Medical Center. The SLU IPE programs are embedded and integrated into eight health professional programs at the undergraduate, graduate, and clinical practice levels with the goal to improve patient care and outcomes as well as support the well-being of providers and care teams. Breakdowns in effective teamwork, communication across professions, ongoing silos of education and practice, and ineffective systems of care account for over 70% of patient errors and adverse outcomes. Dr. Pole has a particular interest in advancing interprofessional approaches to improve patient safety and quality improvement. He received his Master’s in Public Health from UCLA and his PhD in Education with a focus on Curriculum and Instruction from Saint Louis University. His strengths include program design and evaluation, curriculum development, and longitudinal community partnerships.  Dr. Pole is an Assistant Professor in family and community medicine where he provides mentoring for medical students in the Community Service Distinction Program.  He has over 35 years of experience integrating medical management with nutrition, exercise, stress management, and behavior change to improve patient care and self-management in private clinical settings, community non-profit serving the American Indian community, and in higher education.  His work includes addressing the impact of stress on chronic disease, generational and historical trauma, and stress as it impacts health professions students and providers. Dr. Pole is also an ambassador with the Alive & Well Communities Program and served on the initial evaluation team for Alive & Well STL in the region.

  3. Identify tools and approaches that they can apply and practice that support health and well-being
