Beyond Words: Experiencing the Power of Art to Help Heal Trauma, Susie McGaughey, ATR, LPC
Attendees will build on the basics of the 6R’s of Effective Therapeutic Interventions (from Session 1) to learn more about how these strategies naturally fit into the Expressive Arts, specifically with visual arts. Additional case studies and programs highlighting this will be shared. Much of this session will be hands on, with participants engaging in a visual art project to better illustrate how to use the power of visual arts to provide trauma informed interventions.
Attendees will be able to apply:
- Specific techniques to effectively use visual arts with clients.
- Their first-hand experience of trauma-informed visual art interventions and process the creative experience with others.

Susie McGaughey is a registered art therapist and licensed counselor with more than 12 years of experience working with children and adolescents with histories of trauma. As a Great Circle therapist, she has completed Phase 1 training in The Neurosequential Model of Therapeutics© and focuses on integrating expressive arts therapies into her trauma work with children and adolescents. McGaughey also has worked with patients and families facing serious medical illnesses or in hospice, and in bereavement. She has a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theater from Webster University and a Master’s Degree in Art Therapy Counseling from Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville.
