Sharon Johnson, PhD is professor and dean of the School of Social Work at the University of Missouri-St. Louis (UMSL).  She maintains an active research agenda focused on violence, HIV-risk, trauma, post-traumatic stress disorder, and substance use among minorities, women, and youth.  Her federally funded training grants prepare students for practice in integrated behavioral health settings and substance abuse screening, brief intervention and referral to treatment. She has conducted community needs assessments and social service program evaluations primarily aimed at strengthening agencies abilities to provide quality services to at-risk youth.


Exploring and Expanding the Sc ience on Discrimination-based Trauma, Sharon Johnson, PhD

This session will examine the state of the science regarding discrimination-based trauma.  Using racial trauma as an exemplar, we will explore research and practice perspectives on its development, current status, and issues with assessment and frameworks for treatment.  The session will conclude with a participant engaged discussion of issues and concerns encountered when addressing discrimination-based trauma.


Learning Objectives:

  • Provide an overview of discrimination-based trauma using racial trauma among African Americans as a case study.
  • Provide a framework for addressing discrimination-based trauma that will be applicable across targeted populations.
  • Expand the science utilizing practitioner perspectives on discrimination-based trauma.
